About this episode

Mari Wilson is the singer behind the iconic 1982 hit ‘Just What I Always Wanted’, as well as ‘Cry Me a River’, and became one of the most recognisable performers of the early 1980s with her trademark beehive, retro style and band The Wilsations. The self-styled ‘Neasden Queen of Soul’ went on to build a hugely varied career spanning pop, soul and jazz, performing with jazz legend Stan Getz at the Royal Festival Hall, appearing alongside Boy George in Taboo and in Dusty The Musical, and recording the theme tune to the hit sitcom Coupling. Now, more than four decades into her career, Mari is back with Girl About Town, her first album of original material in more than a decade. Released on 4 September 2026 . Mari Wilson is our guest in episode 604 of My Time Capsule and chats to Michael Fenton Stevens about the five things she'd like to put in a time capsule; four she’d like to preserve and one she’d like to bury and never have to think about again .
