About this episode

Doug Risher talks with Dr. David Hafler of Yale University about exciting new research into multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Dr. Hafler discusses how our understanding of MS has changed over the past 50 years, the role of genetics and Epstein-Barr virus, and advances in treatment. They also explore his research into the early warning signs of Parkinson’s disease, including loss of smell and sleep disorders, and whether identifying inflammation in the brain earlier could eventually lead to treatments that slow or prevent the disease. Dr. Hafler will discuss these topics in greater detail at “Curing Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis,” a free community event this Friday, September 25th, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Nantucket Cottage Hospital.
