About this episode

The Hugging Face incident was a laboratory demonstration of St. Thomas Aquinas’s account of evil. Evil emerged not from a desire for evil, but from intelligence pursuing a lesser good without being ordered toward the whole good. That separation creates a privation, an absence of proper order. Within that gap, distortion turns the lesser good into your “god.” The AI agents were given a limited objective, treated it as supreme, and calculated whatever steps advanced it. This led to destructive acts committed in service of the lesser good. The pattern is eerily inescapable. It may demonstrate that without ultimate goodness as the ultimate objective, evil eventually becomes inevitable. There isn’t a moment to waste in understanding this, and even our understanding cannot ensure that China, or anyone else racing to build these systems, will accept it. The Dr. Frankensteins creating them may not recognize the truth until their creation demonstrates it for them.
