About this episode

On October 8, 1871, a wall of fire swept through northeastern Wisconsin, destroying the town of Peshtigo and killing an estimated 1,200 to 2,500 people across the region. It remains the deadliest wildfire in American history, yet its story was largely overshadowed by the Great Chicago Fire, which erupted the very same night. Survivors described tornadoes of flame, mysterious explosions, and victims whose bodies showed no burns despite the melted metal found in their pockets. In the years that followed, stories emerged of demonic figures, miraculous escapes, ghostly apparitions, and even a theory that the destruction had come from outer space. Tonight, we explore the Peshtigo Fire, the horrifying accounts of those who survived, and the strange legends that grew from one of the most devastating nights in American history.
